Climbing Wall Leading Award

This recently developed award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to teach lead climbing on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls with fixed protection. It covers the introduction, coaching and on-going development of the technical and movement skills required to lead routes and builds on the skills acquired in either the Climbing Wall Award or Single Pitch Award   Candidates must hold one or other of these full awards to access the CWLA scheme.

Registration is by application to the Mountain Training board.  Your experience of logged sessions as a CWA or SPA holder, along with your personal indoor climbing experience is taken into account as part of the application process. The minimum pre-requirements for this experience include:

  • 50 led routes
  • Experience of climbing at 3 different major climbing walls
  • Belayed a lead climber 50 times
  • 25 lead routes at grade F6a
  • 20 supervising sessions post CWA or SPA
Registration for the Award can be made HERE

Training

At manzoku we run the one day CWLA programme at two venues.  Llangorse Rope Centre for its wealth of bouldering and creative elements and the Summit Centre for its HUGE walls.  Expect to spend plenty of time watching these walls speed past as you gain your falling wings.

From Training to Assessment

Candidates have often told us how difficult it can be gaining the relevant teaching experience post training.  To help rectify this we now run an extra training day specifically for CWLA candidates to work alongside us running a Lead Climbing  training session.  This optional day can be booked separately but is discounted if booked as a package with the CWLA  training course.

Assessment

Prior to assessment you must have successfully led 100 different climbs at least half of which must be a grade of French 6a or above, belayed a lead climber on at least 100 routes and assisted or observed at least 5 teaching leading sessions delivered by a suitably qualified person.  Please note that the 6a grade is for an on-sight rather than a redpoint ascent.

We would be more than happy to review your log-book at any time to help you focus on areas in which you may need more experience before booking on an assessment course.
