About Us

manzoku was started in 1997 by Andy Cummings with the aim of helping you enjoy the mountains and crags of the UK and come home safely from your many adventures. As a team of mountaineers, hill walkers and climbers we’re constantly developing our courses to give you the best training on offer.   Andy Cummings – the founder of manzoku, Andy started climbing with friends on the crags and quarries of South Wales in the early ’80s.  A member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and with a handful of first ascents to his name, he’s most at home on the technical and spicy slab routes of Carreg y Barcud. Best moment – “Too many to choose: great friendships, summits, classic routes, who could pick just one?” Worst moment – “Realising that two German alpinists had just skied in two hours what had taken us close to two days to walk.  I learned to ski after that!” Fully leaded or decaf.? -” Fully leaded, straight from the espresso pot.  There is no other!”     Matt Smith – the bouldering power-house of the team, Matt’s usually found upside down hanging on to some awful holds.  A natural instructor, he brings his huge passion for the sport to all his sessions. Best Moment –  “It’s difficult to say, there have been a lot of top moments.  Oddly, the best moments seem to be  the ones when I’m most scared! Worst moment – “Probably when a hold broke and my partner decked out and broke his back. I had done my most serious route to date just before too.  Makes me feel nervous thinking about that evening”. Peanut Butter or Nutella? – “Ah! Funny story about the last time I ate Peanut Butter. But I won’t go into it here……”     Will Kilner – our resident encyclopaedia.  Will is the master of all things technical and employs his engineering background when questioned about anchors, belays and forces.  He’s the regional rep for the Mountain Training Association and the mainstay of the local Brecon Beacons Climbing & Mountaineering Club Best Moment (…and the worst)?- “My first real Scottish winter ticks both these boxes! It’s a long story but its full of fear, adventure, relief and enjoyment!” Sea-Cliff or Mountain Crag? – “Mountain Crag – I don’t like fish!”
